We work together to ensure all children in Moore County achieve the most important predictor of long term success - grade-level reading by the end of the third grade.

YEARLY EVENTS
Read Across America Day - For Read Across America Day, March 2nd of every year, GMR holds a bracket competition called
"Reading Ruckus" for local child care facilities. Similar to March Madness, a men's basketball single-elimination tournament, the competition consists of 8 completing early childhood books. Children in individual classrooms predict which books they think they will like the most and turn in their brackets. Each day 2 books compete against each other and the classrooms will decide which one was their favorite. The book with the most votes wins that day. This continues until the last book is chosen and there is a winner. Click below to view the flyers for this years Reading Ruckus.

Summer Reading Stations - To combat the summer reading slide for children, GMR establishes outdoor reading stations at various locations in Moore County during the summer months. These stations offer children a new age-appropriate book, a STEAM activity, drinks and snacks, and provide valuable information and resources to their caregivers. Stations consist of paid interns and volunteers to help guide families on the importance of reading and spending time together everyday. Storytellers can often be seen reading to families as they visit the sites. For more information on the Summer Reading Stations, click the links below.

New science tells us that children's first five years are when they develop the foundation for all future learning. All the cooing, toe-counting, and eye-gazing is brain fertilizer, and every time we connect with children, it's not just their eyes that light up - it's their brains, too! OUR HISTORY
In 2012, over 20 community partners created Southern Pines Grows Great Readers. After much hard work and success in increasing literacy for children from low-income families in Southern Pines, the group was honored with a 2015 National Pacesetter Award, one of the highest distinctions presented by the National Campaign for Grade-Level Reading. Now, we are taking their efforts to scale and moving this successful city-level initiative county-wide.
