DCDEE Memo: December 10, 2020 Reminders for a Safe Holiday Season

North Carolina is experiencing record high numbers of COVID-19 cases reported daily, hospitalizations, and the percent of tests that are positive, indicating very high levels of viral spread across the state. With the winter holidays approaching, NC Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) is asking North Carolinians to help slow the spread of this virus and protect our loved ones.

Please help NCDHHS by sharing the following information with your staff and families:
  • The "Celebrate the Holidays Safely" flyer (also available in Spanish) includes     recommendations on how to stay safe during the winter holidays. Please share by:
    • Posting flyers around your child care facility, particularly in waiting areas
    • Sending flyers home with children and families
    • Sharing flyers through employee newsletter or listserv
  • Social media graphics and sample posts to share on social media channels to further spread the word about celebrating the holidays safely.
    • Celebrate the winter holidays safely.
      • Avoid travel️.
      • Avoid gatherings with those with whom you don't live️.
      • If you choose to travel or gather: get a test, keep it small and outdoors, and always wear a mask.
      • #StayStrongNC
    • Gatherings with those outside your immediate family should be avoided this holiday season. But if you do plan to get-together, NCDHHS has more detailed winter holiday guidance to keep you and others safe from COVID-19.
      • More information is available on how to how to celebrate the holidays safely.
    • NCDHHS has released COVID-19 guidelines everyone should follow this winter and during the holidays.
      • NCDHHS knows this is a particularly hard time of year to stay home and to be separated from family and friends, but it is the best way North Carolina can do its part to show care for one another as the fight of this pandemic continues.
      • Take these steps
  • Information about the COVID-19 vaccine
    • Tested, safe, and effective COVID-19 vaccines will be available soon to help North Carolinians defeat this virus, get back in control of our lives, and back to the people and places we love.  Although the vaccines were developed quickly, they were built upon years of work in developing vaccines for similar viruses. Development time was shortened without cutting corners.
    • A safe and effective vaccine will be available to all who want it, but supplies will be limited at first. Independent state and federal public health advisory groups have determined that the best way to fight COVID is to start first with vaccinations for those most at risk, then reaching more people as the vaccine supply increases throughout 2021.
Thank you for sharing this information on holidays and vaccines, and for working to keep your fellow North Carolinians safe. We wish you, your family, and your community a safe holiday season!
