Our “Books for Kids” project makes new, age-appropriate books available directly to the families of young children in need and encourages parents to read to their children. During home visits staff members from Moore County Health Department, Life Care Pregnancy Center, North Moore Family Resource Center, FirstHealth Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and the Children's Developmental Services Agency distribute books and provide literacy advocacy efforts. The home visitors will conduct a reading session in the home modeling appropriate reading practices for the parents. At the Health Department, books and literacy materials will be distributed by staff trained in literacy issues when a child comes for a check-up or immunizations. Parents will be provided with information that stresses the importance of reading to their children each day.
